OVER the last few days we have been saluting astonishing acts of bravery in France 60 years ago. Today, we herald heroics which happened more recently and closer to home.
Steven Hughes demonstrated astonishing selflessness by forcing his way into elderly neighbour Ted Striker's blazing house and rescuing him. Our picture of the charred remains of Mr Striker's bedroom underlines the danger that Steven disregarded.
Two firefighters were also commended for diving into the treacherous waters of the Ouse to save a man.
The three honoured men were too modest to say it, so we will: they are heroes.
