PIKE Hills Golf Club is celebrating its centenary with a brace of elections.
John Taylor, 79, is this year's president of the York Union of Golf Clubs, while Bruce Wakeman has been elected as president of the East Yorkshire Alliance.
Taylor, known as 'JT' joined Pike Hills in 1970 and was elected to the full committee two years later. He served for 24 years - 19 of them as house chairman. He was also rabbits captain in 1972, club captain in 1979, seniors captain in 1996 and captain of the Past Captains' Society in 2003. And this year 'JT' is 'President of the York Union of Golf Clubs'.
Hull-born Wakeman, 56, a single-figure handicap golfer, was Pike Hills' club captain six years ago and is chairman of their centenary sub-committee.
He moved to York in 1978 with his financial services business and soon became a member at Pike Hills and has supported the East Riding Winter Alliance for more than 30 years.
The club recently held a stableford competition which raised £46.50 to help pay for
coaching junior girls.
The winner, Linda Smith, playing off a handicap of 36, won the second division with a massive 48 points slashing her handicap to 30.
The Rose Marie Cup was won by Dorothy Lecker with a net score of 69. Runner up was Wendy Newbegin net 70.
The qualifying round of the Health Perception Ladies Championship which was run in conjunction with the Ladies Golf Union was won by Pike Hills junior 23-handicapper Hanna Batty with a net 69.
She will now represent the club in the area final at Bedale on July 12.
Pike Hills GC raised about £6,200 from their 11th annual charity golf day to provide funds for the York Coronary Support Group and the Cardiology Fund of York District Hospital.
The amount raised includes £200 from York and District Indoor Bowls Club.
By the time the contribution from the Inland Revenue is added from the Gift Aid forms the final total raised will be in the region of £6,800.
This means that the event has raised over £52,000 for Coronary Care in the York area in the last 11 years.
In the evening, club captain Roy Collier welcomed everybody and was followed by John Taylor, who conducted a lively auction which raised nearly £400.
Barry Swallow, from Golf and Leisure breaks, presented a cheque for more than £130 raised by his company in a raffle during the day.
Dr Rob Cook, one of the consultant cardiologists at York District Hospital, thanked all concerned for their support. David Impey gave his thanks to all, but in particular to Bill and Beryl Murch, who continue to be the driving force behind this event.
Results from the day are at the foot of this page.
The York Amateur Championship is being staged at The Oaks tomorrow alongside the Seward Trophy.
