THE battle against gum droppers has intensified in York.
City of York Council's gum- busting machine is now hitting the streets five days a week.
Funding from York Business Pride and labour courtesy of PACY - a partnership between York Arclight Project, City of York Council and York Association for the Care and Reform of Offenders - will enable the machine to be used more frequently than the current three days.
Russell Stone, general manager of Streetscene, at City of York Council, said the PACY workers had all been fully trained to use the gum buster machine and, under the supervision of council staff, would work on specifically designated city centre streets every Monday and Thursday.
"Gum-busting is worse than painting the Forth Bridge, in that you need to start again before you have finished," he said.
"But we are hoping that the contribution of York Business Pride and PACY will enable certain areas to be cleaned twice as often each year."
The city council has funding to enable the machine to be used three days a week.
York Business Pride has made a donation to PACY in return for the provision of labour on a further two days.
