I AM very concerned at the growing number of obese people in this country, and particularly so for children who are exposed to junk food almost from birth.
What chance do they stand of growing up with a taste for wholesome, nourishing food when their mothers cannot be bothered to feed them correctly?
Yet one hears of people constantly whinging about a "nanny state" if the Government dares to bring about laws to reduce obesity.
The old-time nanny was a gem to the children in her care. She made sure her young charges were brought up with good manners, good food, a respect for others and fit to take their place in society, when their mothers were either unable, or unwilling, to take that role.
So why is the idea of a nanny state so repugnant to so many?
Those who already eat well, exercise and try and stick to a healthy lifestyle won't have to change at all. It is those who cannot be bothered who will complain, yet indulge in over-eating, over-drinking, never exercising, smoking and then expect the over-burdened NHS to pick up the pieces when their health inevitably breaks down.
The numbers of flabby men with beer-bellies (and bodies to match) and the huge women whose burgeoning backsides should never see the inside of tracksuit bottoms (but usually do!) are becoming greater by the year.
The rest of us should vote for a Government that works to bring about healthy changes in lifestyles when sorely needed.
