While the Beckhams and Robbie Williams have tried in vain to become British stars in America, Gabrielle in her own quiet, unassuming way has become a major selling artist over there.
Her brand of gentle, observational ballads makes pleasant non-confrontational listening. Lyrically, Gabrielle strives to be cutting edge, as demonstrated on Latchkey Kid and War Of Two Minds.
But musically, lushly gorgeous arrangements undermine any attempt at becoming a protest poet. Gabrielle works better as a laidback chanteuse performing pleasant summer sounds.
It is no surprise that most of her biggest hits have been during the sunnier months. Gabrielle's catalogue is rather one-dimensional. But if you can't resist sweet fondant coffee creams, why bother with a selection pack of brittle toffees?
