ENGLAND captain Michael Vaughan was able to pronounce himself fit for the Second Test at Headingley on Thursday after scoring a solid 32 off 62 balls for Yorkshire Phoenix in their 59-run totesport division two victory over Scottish Saltires in Edinburgh on Monday.
Vaughan suffered no adverse reaction from the knee injury which kept him out of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's and he was glad of the opportunity to warm up in the middle.
"It is a very big day for me and I hope I come through it all right," said Vaughan before going out to bat. He tested his knee with some quick running between the wickets although he did not sprint quickly enough to beat Steven Knox's throw which ran him out with a direct hit when he was still a good yard out of his crease.
Vaughan managed four handsome boundaries but it was a slow pitch on which run-scoring was not easy and Yorkshire's total of 199-8 was always going to be a demanding one.
Scotland made a brave attempt at the runs and were 61-1 at one stage but they got into trouble against some excellent spin bowling from Richard Dawson who claimed career-best figures of 4-20 in nine overs to take the man-of-the-match award.
Once again, Yorkshire could find no-one to play a really big innings after they had been put in to bat and Matthew Wood emerged as top-scorer with 33 off 63 balls before being bowled by Sridharan Sriram.
Phil Jaques and Anthony McGrath each made 28 but both fell to juggling catches by wicket-keeper Colin Smith who held on to four victims in all and did a good job stood up to the stumps to the Saltires' pacemen.
Yorkshire gave Steve Kirby the new ball on his return from a back injury but Fraser Watts hammered him for four boundaries and he was withdrawn from the attack but returned later to claim the last two wickets to fall.
McGrath put in a spirited spell in which he conceded only 28 runs for the wicket of opener, Knox, who got in a tangle on the backfoot and was lbw.
The best bowling of the day, however, came from Dawson who struck in his first over by getting Yasir Arafat caught behind the corner by Jaques as he attempted to sweep and he then drew Sriram forward to have him caught behind by Richard Blakey.
In his second spell Dawson clean bowled Craig Wright before taking a return catch to dismiss Colin Smith while White accounted for Ryan Watson and Douglas Lockhart with consecutive balls but was denied the hat-trick by Ian Stanger.
This was Yorkshire's fourth victory of the season and it keeps them in contention for promotion to Division One but they have played more games than any of their opponents and must keep on winning.
Former Yorkshire bowler Alex Wharf finished the game off with a hat-trick, as Glamorgan claimed top spot in the totesport League first division with a nail-biting 13-run win over Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Wharf removed Graeme Wagg, Nick Knight and Dewald Pretorious in the penultimate over to finish with 4-35.
Bears skipper Knight hit a battling 111 in the home side's pursuit of 245 but the former England batsman found little support and Glamorgan just held on.
Michael Powell (73) and Robert Croft (54) put the Dragons on course for victory with a stand of 87 for the second wicket.
Mark Wagh checked the Dragons' progress with four for 35 but the visitors' 244-9 just proved enough despite the efforts of Knight.
