Great Britain orienteer Helen Winskill continued her European Championship selection form with victory in yesterday's York City Park Trophy.

The South Yorkshire member ran home 28 seconds clear of York-born Jenny Whitehead in a South Yorkshire 1-2-3 of the women's 4.7-kilometre course with team-mate Clare Leventon two minutes behind in third place.

South Yorkshire claimed another victory in the men's race with Oli Johnson stealing home in 22minutes and 24 seconds to beat Nial Bourke of Aire by 40 seconds with Eborienteer Matt Speake 16 seconds further back in third.

Two Bristol racers made the long trip worthwhile with both claiming the veteran prizes. Mark Saunders finished sixth overall on the 4.9k men's course in 26-53, while Alice Bedwell ran home in 31-43 for fifth overall and the first female veteran trophy.

Competitors had to contend with shoppers on a busy and hot day while navigating their way around the Minster and other snickleways across the city centre.

More than 100 people took part in the event with several having a go for the first time on a special one-kilometre beginners' course.

Race organiser Ann Smith said: "We're very pleased with how it went. We've never done it on the Bank Holiday Monday before so we weren't sure about the turn-out but it was very good considering the Scottish Championships are taking place, and we had quite a few elite runners taking part."
