GNER's groundbreaking wireless internet proved the star attraction among hundreds of national events intended to introduce the wonders of the world wide web to people over 50.

The York-based train operator is the first in the UK to offer wireless internet on its trains, following successful trials on the East Coast Main Line.

Silver Surfers' Day saw more than 500 events aimed at giving people aged 50-plus a chance to use the Internet and email for the first time.

The rail operator hosted an introductory session demonstrating the technology to travellers on one of its wi-fi equipped trains between York and London Kings Cross on Silver Surfers' Day.

GNER information technology expert Jason Clamp guided travellers through the service, placing a special emphasis on ease of use for first-time senior surfers.

Silver Surfers' Day national co-ordinator Bob Holmes also paid a flying visit to GNER at London Kings' Cross, where wireless internet is also available in the first class lounge on Platform 8. He said: "It's very impressive to see GNER's system at first hand."
