Great Britain orienteer Jenny Whitehead will be looking to salvage some confidence at Bank Holiday Monday's York City Trophy after a costly error forced her out of the selection race for the European Championships.
The York-born 25-year-old had been looking good for a seat on the plane to Denmark in July after coming second in a Forest of Dean ranking event on May 2 and winning the British Relay Championships with her South Yorkshire team-mates.
But a nightmare ten-minute mistake in the British Sprint Championships undid all the hard work and left her out of the team selection.
She said: "Unfortunately I had two bad runs and managed to run myself out of the European team which was a nightmare.
"I actually made a ten-minute mistake in the race which I haven't done for about 15 years.
"I'm looking forward to the York race in the hope that it will restore some confidence."
South Yorkshire colleague Helen Winskill did, however, make selection and will be a Great Britain presence at Monday's race.
York club Eborienteers, meanwhile, are hoping as many local people as possible will have a go at the challenge of navigating through the city's snickleways by signing up for the race on the day.
The start and finish is outside the Marks and Spencer store in Parliament Street, with start times between 10.30am to 12.30pm.
Skill level, speed and ability do not matter as everyone can still compete and the added dimension of navigating through the streets and shoppers of York offers an extra element to a simple run.
Entries are accepted on the day from 10am. Call Ann Smith on 01347 821220 for more information.
