A YORK father-of-two who has successfully recovered from prostate cancer is now helping to raise awareness of the disease.

Michael Jones, 66, from Haxby, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998 after discovering a reminder for a check-up while moving house.

Michael said he was shocked to learn he had the cancer, and now has a warning for other men.

"If you have the slightest doubt, don't be embarrassed - it could cost you your life. See your GP to get checked and ask for a PSA, a simple, painless blood test that can help to detect cancer of the prostate," he said.

Michael is now helping to raise awareness of cancers that affect men by promoting a charity cycle ride raising money for Cancer Research UK.

The 7th annual Wetherby Cycle Ride takes place on Sunday, June 6, with a choice of two circular routes, one of about 20 miles and another of about 30 miles.

Jeff Newton, from Wetherby, who is organising the cycle rde, said they already had over 100 entries for the event, which starts at 10.30am, behind the Horsefair Centre, in Wetherby.

Jeff said: "It's not a race. It's meant to be a pleasant day out for people just wanting a couple of hours out cycling. The terrain is flat.

"Refreshments of water, chocolate and oranges will be provided."

Prostate cancer recently overtook lung cancer to become the most commonly diagnosed cancer in UK men with more than 27,000 new cases a year and more than 9,900 deaths.

The ride is open to adults and children from the age of 12, if supervised. The entry fee is £6 for adults, £3 for children and £14 for families (a maximum of four people).
