WE urge York citizens to vote in the European elections in June so the results truly represent the views of people in our region.
There are concerns that if there is a low turn-out in the European elections, the British National Party will benefit.
All those who are opposed to the BNP and their message of fear and race hatred should take part in the election - voting for whichever party best reflects their views - to guarantee the BNP does not profit from a low turn-out.
It is essential to our democracy that people take part and have their say - otherwise the system can be hijacked by those who reject the key principles of fairness, decency and respect for others on which our society is built.
This year - for the first time - the ballot in Yorkshire will be all-postal. Voters will be receiving their ballot papers through the post during the next few days.
If anyone is confused about to how to fill out their papers, or need help please call the helpline number that will come with your papers.
Impartial council staff will be happy to explain the system and offer assistance.
Coun Dave Merrett, Labour group leader,
Coun Steve Galloway, Liberal Democrat group leader,
John Galvin, York Conservative Party agent,
Coun Mark Hill, Green group leader,
Guildhall, York.
