HEALTH chiefs are urging people in York and North Yorkshire to walk their way to fitness.
At least seven in ten people do not take enough exercise to benefit their health, according to Selby and York Primary Care Trust (PCT).
But residents can now improve their fitness by joining a number of short walks across the Selby and York area, organised by the PCT.
Each walk lasts for between 30 minutes and an hour and is led by a volunteer walk leader.
PCT medical director and York GP Dr David Geddes, said: "Regular walking is an excellent way of keeping fit that can be adapted to your daily routine.
"It improves your energy, confidence and mental well-being as well as helping to control your weight. By keeping fit you can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Walking also helps blood pressure control, bowel cancer and osteoporosis."
The walks are suitable for all ages and abilities. Walkers should wear warm and comfortable clothing with flat-soled shoes, and take a drink.
For more information, phone Walking Scheme Co-ordinator Michele Taylor on 01904 724109. Anyone interested in walks in the Easingwold area should phone Marion Archer on 01609 767276.
