Orienteers from across the region will be aiming to be streets ahead when they hit York for the annual City Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday.

Last year's event took in sights such as Micklegate, the Museum Gardens and York market and more of the same is expected this time round as runners mingle with shoppers as they plot their way through the streets and snickleways of the city.

The challenge of the sport is to pick out the quickest route to follow and complete the course in the fastest time, via a series of control points.

The York City Trophy was born out of the foot-and-mouth crisis four years ago but proved so popular that it has remained on the orienteering calendar ever since, run by local club Eborienteers.

British team member Jenny Whitehead retained the title last year along with fellow Great Britain athlete Oli Johnson.

Four courses will be used during the day, two over five kilometres and two over 2.5km, with under-17s restricted to the short courses for safety reasons.

Registration starts at 10am, and entry is limited on the day. To find out more, call 01347 821220.
