MEMBERS of York's Territorial Army (TA) treated the city's Lord Mayor to an unusual ride around the city walls.
The trip in a light tank, known officially as a Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) was the TA's thank-you gesture to the city for giving its members time off from their jobs to take part in military activities.
The Lord Mayor, Coun Charles Hall, said riding in the tank had been "unbelievable".
He said: "A few heads were turned. It's all part of bringing the Army closer to the city."
The Lord Mayor said he had never imagined he would ride in a tank past St John's College, where he was himself once a student.
Members of the TA are due to meet civic leaders at York Mansion House on Tuesday, as a formal gesture of gratitude towards the city for its flexibility in allowing the work of TA members to continue.
Labour councillor Janet Looker, of Guildhall ward, is to become the new Lord Mayor in the Mayor-making ceremony at the Guildhall on Thursday.
The new Sheriff of York will be former councillor Bob Scrase.
