PUNTERS streaming to York Racecourse for today's start of the May meeting were expected to notice a few changes at Knavesmire.
Course officials have put the finishing touches to more than 50 projects to make facilities even better at the award-winning track.
Among the most high-profile included transforming the redundant steps behind the Melrose Stand into a terrace for owners and trainers.
New attractions for racing fans include the opening of a new Tote betting shop in the Knavesmire Stand, numerous upgrades to the course catering, and a buttery next to the lawn beside the Knavesmire Stand.
William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: "We have reviewed all our retail catering and made changes in every enclosure, with the intention of offering more choice in better surroundings and creating a few dishes which we hope will become favourites."
Racegoers will also notice the increased speed of service in the Knavesmire Stand restaurant, which has been split into a free-flow system like those used in motorway service stations.
The May meeting, including tomorrow's showpiece Dante race, runs until Thursday. An attendance of 10,000 was expected today, with a target of 37,000 over the three days.
