LOOKING quiet in about 1893 is Stonegate - one of York's most historic streets. The Via Praetoria, or paved street, for the Roman fort of Eboracum, the street has been in use for about 1,900 years.
This picture shows the street in more serene times with the sign for the Boddy's Star Inn the only real illumination.
Some 50 years on and little has changed, but Boddy's Inn has been replaced with Ye Olde Starre Inne, the current name.
The pub claims to be York's oldest licensed inn, dating back to 1644.
Further down Stonegate, this time in the 1960s, cars line the route. The next picture, also from the 1960s, shows a little more of the Stonegate we know today.
A popular haunt for tourists, the road is lined with busy shoppers.
For the bottom two pictures, we turn our attention to Swinegate. It may now be the entrance to The Quarter and York's upmarket wine bars, but back in the 1960s the picture was somewhat different. The area looks sparse and workmanlike.
