PICKERING Royal Oak won the RJF Homes Beckett League Victory Cup for the first time when they beat league champions Kirkdale United 3-2 in a thrilling final at Pickering Town's ground.
Royal Oak went ahead when a free kick from the right after six minutes found John Appleyard, who forced the ball into Kirkdale's goal from close range. Kirkdale stormed back to equalise six minutes later, Paddy Robinson scoring.
Royal Oak regained the lead after 35 minutes when Ben Thompson lofted in a 35 yard left foot corner from the right which deceived Kirkdale's keeper and went in.
Kirkdale stepped up a gear in the second half. After 62 minutes Chris Simpson headed straight at Strangeway following a Phil Marwood cross. Ten minutes later Graham Jemison set up Ian Prendergast, whose 18 yard shot hit the post.
After 75 minutes Prendergast levelled the scores and after 80 minutes Hornby got what proved to be the winner when he latched on to a through-ball by Damon Cox and raced clear to score.
Simpson hit the post for Kirkdale after 85 minutes. Prendergast had a corner cleared off the line by Hornby and in stoppage time Kirkdale's Ashley Windress hit the post with a 20 yard right foot shot.
The cup and trophies were presented by John Jennison, president of Lincoln City and Pickering Town.
Hornby was Royal Oak's man of the match winner, with Windress best for Kirkdale.
