FOLLOWING last year's critically acclaimed EP Not The Way, Cass McCombs' first full-length record is not an A but more a C-minus.
McCombs clearly fancies himself as the new millennium's Bob Dylan, with simple guitar backed by drawling, swooping vocals. It's a pleasant, rather than eye-catching record.
The second track, Bobby, King Of Boys Town sums up the mood, sprawling and meandering rather than striking. Like Dylan, McCombs has a political message to share with us, with tracks such as AIDS In Africa and I Went To Hospital leaving us in no doubt that he is not just here to give us a catchy tune.
But this is smothered in a distinctly laid back, "I've got better things to do than sing or listen", style. Which, despite the minor plus points, is how I am left feeling about A. Teacher's report? Could do better.
