A FORMER air traffic researcher from York who wanted to "escape the tyranny" of computers has come up with a fruity solution, with the help and advice of Business Link York and North Yorkshire.
Steven Pocock, who spent the past two years researching control systems for National Air Traffic Services, has opened a fruit smoothie bar in Harrogate after attending Business Link's Fit For Business programme for start-up businesses - and now his research tools are his taste buds.
Mr Pocock, who lives in York, decided to open Smooth Operators, on Albert Street, Harrogate, after visiting New Zealand and Canada, where smoothie juice bars are popular.
He enrolled on the series of courses after consulting the York, Selby & Malton Business Advice Centre, which delivers a range of services on behalf of Business Link.
As part of the programme, Mr Pocock was also assigned a personal business adviser, Tony Breckin, who has provided him with ongoing help and advice.
Mr Pocock said: "I wanted to get away from computers and do something where I could work with my hands. I really believe in the health benefits of fresh juices and I want to educate the Brits on how good they are.
"York Selby & Malton Business Advice Centre's Fit For Business programme and Tony's support were instrumental in helping me get the smoothie bar up and running. The courses told me exactly what I needed to know, from the nuts and bolts of running a business to developing a marketing strategy."
Mr Breckin said: "Smooth Operators is already proving to be popular with the people of Harrogate and I wish Steven every success in the future."
Smooth Operators boasts a menu of more than 30 juices, smoothies and shakes, all of which Mr Pocock developed after months of experimenting in his kitchen at home.
They are made fresh while you wait but those with busy lifestyles can order a smoothie of their choice by visiting the website at www.smoothoperators.biz and then call in to collect it.
