CHAIRMAN Steve Beck has backed York City's management team of Chris Brass and Lee Nogan in their plans to build a "team of their own".

The Minstermen were relegated to the Nationwide Conference with two games still left to play after Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Doncaster but Beck believes that now is not the right time to judge Brass and Nogan.

Both men were appointed last summer and, having impressed the board, were given contract extensions in January.

Player-boss Brass signed a three-year deal and his assistant Nogan agreed terms for two years.

Beck believes the pair now deserve the chance to mastermind a successful Nationwide Conference campaign next season after working under financial constraints during a difficult first season in charge.

He said: "Chris Brass and Lee Nogan have had to work under extreme circumstances this season with a small budget one third of the season before. Despite this, they have approached their managerial roles with total commitment and enthusiasm.

"With only a handful of players contracted for next season, Chris and Lee will now have a blank canvas to work with and the opportunity to build a team of their own. It is only under these circumstances that we feel they should be judged.

"We must all remember, just over 12 months ago we were facing closure and football in the Northern Counties East League, without a home to play. This is another big challenge for York City, but if we maintain good levels of support we have an excellent chance of success in the Conference.

"I would like to say thank you to all our fans for the fantastic level of support they have shown the team and the board of directors this season. We are confident we have a bright future ahead and we will strive to deliver the success all our supporters deserve."
