JAMES Turner set a York and District Senior League scoring record in an astonishing division six match between Dringhouses and visitors Thorp Arch & Boston Spa at St Helens Road.

Despite there being only a total of 15 players available, both sides opted to play the game.

With acres of open space, the batsmen took full advantage and Thorp Arch 20-year-old student Turner hit a league record score for any division of 214 not out as Dringhouses' eight-man side suffered.

Turner, whose score beat the previous record of 213 by Scarborough's Andy Holden in a division two game in 1999, shared an opening stand of 158 with G Casey, who made 40 and went on to bat throughout his side's total of 290 all out.

It was then seven man Thorp Arch's turn to suffer as Dringhouses mounted a successful run chase. Andy Page (77), who had earlier taken 4 for 110, shared an opening stand of 128 with Ray Klariik (56).

Former Heslington player Bob Taylor hit 82no and Paul Holgate 45no and they shared in the third century stand of the game, putting on an unbroken 125 for the fourth wicket to gain a seven wicket win.

The match total was an aggregate record for division six.
