YORK Union of Golf Clubs have devised a major incentive for all their players.
The Union are to introduce an Order of Merit charged with finding the player of the year based on the best scores in scratch events.
The tournaments that will count are the Amateur championship, the Open, the Issott Trophy and the Match-play championship as well as points for representation in the club teams in the Scratch League, plus performances while representing YUGC in Inter-District Union events.
Meanwhile, YUGC's first trophy of the season was captured in emphatic style by Pike Hills' Wayne Redhead.
Despite difficult conditions Redhead won the Fletcher Trophy with an excellent score of 66 at Scarthingwell. His nearest challenger, Fulford's Eric Wainwright, was nine shots further adrift.
The Crossley Trophy, due to be played at York GC on the same day, was abandoned due to heavy rain and a water-logged course. The fixture will be re-arranged.
Next on The YUGC calendar is the Kitching Trophy, a four-ball better-ball medal to be played at Malton and Norton GC tomorrow, starting at 8am.
