ENGLISH and proud of it - that was the message delivered by patriotic York revellers on St George's Day.
Staff and customers at the Red Lion Hotel, in Merchantgate, painted their faces red and white, donned St George's Day hats and wore specially printed t-shirts to mark the occasion.
Allan Slater, 43, a Red Lion regular, said he wanted to see everyone in York toasting the patron saint of England.
"I've just come out of the Army, where St George's Day was always celebrated," he said.
"It's about time people in England stood up and said we've got a lot to be proud of.
"We got 'English and proud of it' printed on our t-shirts, because that's what we are."
Assistant manager Nicky Lauby said Allan had decorated the pub with flags and banners.
She said: "It's nice to do something a bit different. I hope everyone enjoys themselves."
