FIRST impressions are important - a good car park and an attractive building. To reach the caf you have to walk through the well-stocked farm shop.
The caf was busy, always a good sign. We moved from the table we originally occupied because it was draughty. Our second choice was not much better. Other customers and staff were also remarking about the chill. Suddenly it became warmer. An outside door had been closed. But not for long!
Here we are told "you can enjoy home-made meals or light refreshments in relaxing surroundings. During warmer months relax in the landscaped gardens".
We were asked to order before we had time to read the menu. The specials board offered cream of broccoli soup (£2.95), chicken in white sauce with chips and vegetables (£5.50) and leek bake with pasta and vegetables (£4.95) which was to be Ann's choice.
This came attractively presented with the piping hot pasta bake in an oval dish. Surrounding the dish, on a cold plate, were warm but not hot vegetables, broccoli, carrots, peas, green beans and salad garnish.
We can appreciate the kitchen's dilemma. Should salad be served on a hot plate or cooked vegetables on a cold one? Choosing the latter course of action was not popular with Ann.
The pasta bake was well received, if somewhat short of leeks. Ann was also given a portion of homemade chips which I ate.
A smoked salmon and Yorkshire cream cheese sandwich (£4.95) was entirely to my liking. This came with a salad garnish including celery and crisps.
Although I had intended to try a gateau, the sandwich and Ann's chips were sufficient. However I inspected the sweet cabinet and the contents looked delicious, especially the roulade.
A scone and butter plus a pot of tea would cost just over £3, sandwiches range from £2.50 to £3.95 and light snacks are priced up to £4.95.
The caf is open daily until 4.30pm. Rectifying the cold draught, resolving the difficulty of warm vegetables and cold plates and recognising that a relaxing atmosphere does not mean rushing in to take orders could give this venue a winning formula. Oh, and removing the rogue apostrophe from the Balloon Tree story!
