READERS who have been following the recent correspondence on weapons of mass destruction, may be interested to know that the Israeli whistleblower, Mordechai Vanunu, has been invited to speak to a public meeting in York.

Mr Vanunu was a technician at Dimona, Israel's (then) secret nuclear weapons manufacturing plant.

In 1985 he contacted the Sunday Times with facts and pictures showing that Israel was manufacturing nuclear weapons. This is the first the world had known of this stockpile.

Vanunu was lured from London to Rome where he was kidnapped by Mossad agents, drugged and shipped to Israel. He was sentenced to 18 years for treason and espionage.

Mordechai Vanunu is due to be released on April 21 and plans go to America to teach history, with a visit to Britain en-route. York Palestine Solidarity Campaign has written to him in his cell in Ashkelon prison to ask him to address an audience in the city.

The Israeli state never misses an opportunity to boast of its democratic credentials. It will be interesting to see their reaction to M. Vanunu's release. Readers can find out more on our website, www.yorkpsc.org.uk.
