VIOLENCE marred the Easter weekend when three men were taken to hospital after incidents in York and Selby.

A 19-year-old man suffered serious head injuries when he was knocked unconscious in York.

The man, from the York area, was taken to York Hospital after the assault at the junction of King Street and Clifford Street at 12.15am yesterday.

Sergeant Neil Hallewell, of York Police, said: "One witnesses has described a group of males leaving the scene in a white Mercedes-type van.

"The police would ask anyone with information concerning details of the van or the occupants to contact them."

The injured man was in a serious condition in York Hospital.

Witnesses should phone 01904 669884 or 01904 631321.

In another incident, a Selby nightclub worker suffered a broken cheekbone during a brawl involving more than 20 people in the town.

Another man needed 12 stitches to his head after the brawl in Club 7 in Ousegate just before 1am on Friday.

Sergeant Dave Hopper from York Police said: "The incident inside the club involved at least 20 individuals.

"Police attended and the incident then continued outside the club. No arrests have been made at this stage."

The club which was formerly known as Jems, is owned by York firefighter Ian Wright and has only been open for a week.

Mr Wright said: "I would appeal for people to come forward if they have seen anything.

"We are not going to tolerate this sort of behaviour and we are working closely with the police to make sure they find out who it was."

Witnesses should phone 01904 669651 or 01904 669884.
