FIREFIGHTERS today warned youths to stay away from railway lines after a trackside fire broke out on the main line out of York.
Children with matches are being blamed for starting an embankment fire alongside the East Coast Main Line, near Hob Moor Primary School, in Acomb.
Crews were called to the blaze at 9.30pm last night.
Trackside weeds and old railway sleepers were set alight. Firefighters spent 90 minutes putting out flames.
A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said police were called to the scene after youths were spotted playing on the track. Fire crews had to cut off a padlock on a fence near the primary school to get to the fire. Train services were not affected.
