CONGRATULATIONS to David Lyon for trying to defend the indefensible by supporting Israel's right to own nuclear weapons (Letters, April 6).

He says that Israel feels vulnerable in the Middle East.

I cannot believe for a second that any country in the region is a threat to Israel, as it has one of the most powerful armies in the world, which it uses on a daily basis to oppress the Palestinian people.

If we use the argument that Israel is allowed nuclear weapons to protect itself against a perceived threat, then by the same logic we should allow Syria, Iran and North Korea to own them, as they are at risk of being invaded by the US.

Surely as long as Israel continues to own nuclear weapons it will only encourage other countries in the region to also try to acquire such weapons to defend themselves from the threat of Israel's weapons.

Resentment is only going to build up against the West while the US and UK insist on disarming countries of weapons of mass destruction while arming Israel.
