MANOR School's U13 girls team represented York City FC in the area finals of the National Schools' six-a-side football competition at Huddersfield.
They won through to the finals at Leeds Road playing fields by winning an event involving 13 York schools at Huntington.
The York girls got off to a great start by beating hosts Huddersfield Town. They then drew against sides representing Halifax Town and Newcastle United but missed out on a place in the national finals at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, when they lost against Hull City and Leeds United.
The Manor squad of Amy George, Gemma Hatfield, Dani Horsman, Shuna Mackay, Lucy O'Carroll, Michaela Shillito and Kayleigh Stubbs were accompanied to Huddersfield by trainer Sarah Triffett and City's football in the community officer Paul Olsson.
But it is not just the girls who are setting the pace at Manor.
One of the boys teams will tackle St James' School, Knaresborough, in the final of the North Yorkshire Schools Under-16 Cup final at Harrogate Town's Wetherby Road ground on Wednesday, April 21.
The York-based youngsters booked their place in the final by winning 1-0 at Stokesley in the semi-final after earlier defeating Scarborough schools Raincliffe 2-1 and Scalby 2-0.
St James' thrashed Harrogate neighbours St Aiden's 6-0, Northallerton 3-2 and Rossett High School (Harrogate) 1-0 to make the final.
RUGBY LEAGUE
Two late tries saw Millthorpe beaten 24-18 at Minsthorpe Community College in the Yorkshire Cup of the Powergen Champion schools rugby league competition.
Minsthorpe, who are former champions of the competition, started strongly with two well worked tries but Millthorpe tightened up and came back with a touchdown from Pat Smith.
Minsthorpe scored again before Mark Wilson scored just before half time. Minsthorpe led at half time 16-12 but Millthorpe moved ahead with early pressure in the second half when a chip kick from Smith was caught and grounded by Wilson to give Millthorpe the lead. Further pressure saw Millthorpe go close but Minsthorpe had the better of the late exchanges and managed two late tries to snatch victory.
CRICKET
York and District Schools Cricket League matches will start in Thursday, April 29. The opening games are:
Under-13 Group 'A': Minster v Manor, Sherburn v Fulford, Lowfield v Barlby, Tadcaster v Huntington.
Under-15 Group 'A': Huntington v barlby, Fulford v Sherburn, Manor and Tadcaster both have a free week.
Under 13 Group 'B': Oaklands v Bootham, Joseph Rowntree v Archbishop's, Millthorpe v All Saints.
Under 15 Group 'B': All Saints v Millthorpe, Archbishop's v Joseph Rowntree, Bootham v Oaklands. Burnholme have a free week.
The draw for the first round of the cup competitions have been held.the draws are:
Under 12 Cup: Millthorpe v Fulford, Canon lee v Sherburn, Archbishop's v Tadcaster, Read (Drax) v All Saints, Huntington v Joseph Rowntree, manor v Burnholme. Byes: Oaklands and Bootham.
Under 14 Cup: Archbishop's v Fulford, Joseph Rowntree v All Saints, Manor v Millthorpe, Oaklands v Huntington. Byes: Burnholme, Tadcaster, Bootham and Sherburn.
TENNIS
The first matches in the York State Schools League are due to be played in the week beginning, Monday, May 3. The first matchesare:
Boys: Sherburn v Joseph Rowntree, Tadcaster v Huntington, Manor v All Saints.
Girls: Joseph Rowntree v Sherburn, Huntington v Tadcaster, All Saints v manor, Millthorpe v Fulford.
All matches are to be completed in the week starting Monday, June 28.
