North Yorkshire champions Lakeside Primary School were presented with a pennant by a Manchester United official after representing the county in the North of England County Six-a-side Football Championships.

The event took place at United's Ayrshire Road training ground and saw the York school compete against fellow champions from West Yorkshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Tyne and Wear.

Lakeside, coached by teacher Richard Crabtree and parent Gary Walker, drew one game and lost three but nevertheless did well.

Walker said: "They battled hard against quality opposition and came unstuck to some clinical finishing."

York Under 11 Schools recovered in spectacular fashion from the disappointment of missing out on the English Schools FA national finals by demolishing Wakefield 5-0 in the Yorkshire League.

All the goals in one-sided encounter came in the second half with Connor Qualter netting the opener.

Tom Richardson's spectacular half-volley from just inside the area made it 2-0 and David Fisher poked home the third from close range.

Chris Bilton and Fisher wrapped up the scoring for the York youngsters who are in league action at Barnsley on Saturday.

Qualter gave a fine display in midfield while James Edmond was composed in goal and Fisher enjoyed a fine all-round match.

York Schools U14s ended their season with a well earned draw against a strong Huddersfield team.

York got off to a good start when Phil Smith was fouled in the box and Danny Penrose stepped up to score from the spot. York had the better of the first half but conceded a goal when a poor clearance was lobbed over Dan Smith.

York regained the lead when Penrose headed in Mark Wilson's second half free-kick.

Huddersfield stormed ahead with two goals in rapid succession but York gained a deserved late equaliser when Adam Field won a free kick 25 yards out and Wilson fired it home through a crowded penalty area.

York finished their campaign with four wins, four draws and just one defeat.
