A TALENTED angler died today of the injuries he suffered in a York hit-and-run crash.

Ben Coulson's grieving father, Ron, said he was considering carrying on fishing in memory of his son, who lived for the sport.

Foxwood resident Ben had been critically ill on a life support machine since being hit by a car in Acomb on Friday night.

The Evening Press reported in later editions yesterday how his distraught relatives were praying for a miracle as they held a bedside vigil. Doctors feared the 27-year-old would not pull through.

Ben's father, Ron, today admitted he felt "numb" after doctors told family the tragic news this morning.

Fighting back tears, he said: "Ben was my life. We went to the hospital at 3am and his blood pressure was going down rapidly. He just could not survive the injuries."

Ron, who taught Ben to fish before his son flourished into an award-winning angler, said: "I do not think Ben would have wanted me to stop fishing. I think I'll carry on - but it will be very lonely."

Speaking from his Copmanthorpe home, the retired engineer said: "Fishing was everything to Ben. It made him so happy."

The accident happened as Ben crossed Green Lane just after 8.30pm. A Vauxhall Cavalier failed to stop. Witnesses should phone York Police on 01904 631321.

A man arrested after the incident was released on police bail.
