THE article on the Castle area (March 23) highlights once again the deplorable condition of this historic site and echoes the remarks made by Lord Esher in his 1968 report: "Clifford's Tower stands forlornly trapped by the parked cars."
Now that our magnificent Railway Museum is proudly celebrating the railway age bicentenary, an engineering solution to provide direct access from the station has been found.
Why not an engineering solution to marry car parking and the enhancement of the Castle site? When Weimar became the cultural capital of Europe five years ago, an underground car park was built under parkland.
An underground car park at Clifford's Tower would undoubtedly be a challenge for an engineer and would cost a lot.
But as surely as the Flying Scotsman will be acquired for the nation by the generosity of Yorkshire people, this Eye of York project would meet with the same response.
