YORK RI had to overcome a spirited fightback by Wath-on-Dearne before easing through 16-10 to the third round of the Yorkshire Shield at New Lane on Saturday.
A Matthew Yates penalty, given when the visitors were caught offside, gave RI an early lead and they tightened their grip on the half hour when hooker Joff Sowray crashed over from close range. Yates' conversion made it 10-0.
Despite good runs from Allott and Turner, who was making his first team debut, Wath withstood the pressure until Yates increased the lead with his second penalty just after half-time.
Wath hit back with a try by winger Green but a third Yates penalty put RI 16-5 in front with ten minutes to go.
Wath's second row Galbraith went over on the stroke of half-time to complete the scoring.
RI now travel to Malton and Norton in the third round.
Tries by Matthew Smith, Phil Raffen, Shane Sellers, Chris McDonald, Andy Bennett, Tony Godfrey and three conversions by Raffen gave Selby a 36-24 win in their friendly at Market Rasen.
