Alex Lloyd introduces a contest for disco divas.

COME on, admit it. You've always had a secret fantasy about being John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever or the girl who gets to dance with him (remember her name?).

Well, believe it or not, that dream could become a reality this weekend as Ikon & Diva hosts the first York Disco Dance Idol 2004.

Reviving the disco dancing competitions hosted by night clubs in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but without the tacky trophies, the funkiest movers in York will get the chance to flaunt their skills and prove that they are king, or queen, of the dance floor.

The competition will consist of two heats, before a final showdown between the two winners in Diva.

The first heat is tonight and will see those who favour pop and chart from the 1970s to the present time strutting their stuff. Dancers with a preference for funky R&B will take part in tomorrow night's heat.

Each winner will be decided by audience voting and will both pick up a trendy VK sponsored motorised scooter.

And if that weren't enough, the pair will go head-to-head in a "dance off" being hosted by York TV's Steve Jordan and Simon Scholes, which will take place tomorrow following the second heat.

The person who is judged to be the Will Young or Michelle McManus of the Disco Dance world will then be crowned York Disco Dance Idol 2004 and take home a portable DVD player and a VIP pass for Ikon & Diva.

It's not too late to enter, so contact 01904 693999 to put your name down. All entrants will receive free VK Cherry vouchers and VK goodie bags will be up for grabs over the weekend.

The competition is only open to dancers aged 18 and over, but a similar event for under 18s will be held at a future Ikon teen session.

Ikon & Diva, Clifton Moor, 01904 693999, 10pm-2am.
