HOW refreshing to read of an organisation, Town and City Parking at Asda, that takes the rights of disabled people seriously (Letters, March 24).
During my period as a representative on the Disabled Persons' Advisory Group we tried to tackle this problem, with virtually no support or help from anyone.
It is amazing just how selfish able- bodied people can be when it comes to disabled parking bays. On one occasion, together with an Evening Press photographer who was trying to help us, we watched two teenagers park a large black car in one of only four disabled bays in Acomb.
The disabled pass clearly showed an elderly man, but the two young people obviously believed it entitled them to park, while genuine disabled people were forced to return home because no parking spaces were available.
This situation is repeated in the supermarkets, council car parks, even the hospital car parks.
