"THESE are society's disposable children." Bob Reitemeier's stark assessment is all the more shocking for being true.
The Children's Society chief executive was commenting on the thousands of under-16s thrown onto the streets every year. In York and North Yorkshire alone, 150 children are forced from their homes by abuse, neglect and rejection.
The charity is challenging councils to pass its "Safe And Sound" test, with plans in place to help young runaways.
But councils can only do so much on their own. What these children need most are foster families who can rebuild their confidence and self-esteem with love.
Meanwhile, as our feature opposite explains, City of York Council is also appealing for more recruits to its Sharing Carers scheme. Here, volunteers look after disabled children to give their families a desperately-needed break.
The difference foster families and Sharing Carers can make is incalculable. We hope both appeals for help are successful.
