MORE than 150 children from the York and North Yorkshire area are forced on to the streets by abuse, neglect and rejection every year, figures released today show.
The statistic was revealed by the Children's Society as it launched its new Safe and Sound campaign.
Its research - carried out by society staff seconded to York University - showed that more than 100,000 children aged under 16 run away from home or care every year - and of these 15,000 are thrown out against their will.
CIty of York Council deputy leader Andrew Waller said only a small number of young people found themselves on York's streets.
But he recognised that some would end up staying with friends or non-approved landlords.
Coun Waller said: "We recognise we should do all we can to prevent families breaking down and are working with education, social services and health to support families under pressure and enhance family mediation."
Viv Kind, the city council's shadow executive member for social services, welcomed the campaign.
She said: "Anything that highlights the difficulties young people get into is welcome."
Coun Kind urged more people to volunteer to be a foster carer.
