TESCO today officially launched new unstaffed checkouts at its Extra store at Clifton Moor, York.
Four self-service checkouts now give customers the opportunity to scan their own shopping and then pay for it by credit/debit card, cheque or cash.
The new technology automatically gives change to people paying with cash, said customer service manager Neil Stuart.
He said the self-service checkouts, which were being rolled out at Tesco stores across the country, offered an alternative for customers to the traditional staffed check-outs.
There had been a "fantastic" response from Clifton Moor customers over the last few days.
He stressed that there would always be an assistant on hand to deal with any difficulties experienced by self-service customers.
There were also measures in place to prevent fraud and shoplifting, but he declined to go into detail.
