A former pub landlord and sports teacher has been permanently appointed to the most senior police post in York and Selby.

Chief Superintendent Tim Madgwick has taken over the role of area commander, after being appointed to the role on a temporary basis last month.

Mr Madgwick, 45, has quickly risen through the ranks. He has served as a sergeant in Clifton, staff officer to the former Chief Constable David Kenworthy, and headed the force's complaints department.

The promotion comes despite his comments in the Evening Press last week, when he said he had not applied for the post because he felt he needed more experience.

He said: "Having taken up the role in Central Area temporarily I am now delighted that I will be able to continue my work here permanently.

"I am very impressed with the staff here and look forward to working with them to serve the communities who live in this area."
