CHILDREN from Derwent Junior School have joined the campaign to save York's Odeon.

Teacher Emma Cameron said children in the York school's year five decided to write persuasive letters after signing the Evening Press petition, which calls for the Blossom Street picturehouse to stay open after a sensitive refurbishment.

Aimee Williams said the Odeon was easier to get to for older people and those without a car, particularly children.

"I hope you will consider the matter and won't close the best cinema in York. If you do, you will regret it."

Lauren Graves said: "It's the only cinema we can get to and it's not far away. Children will be upset if they cannot go to see their favourite films."

Sarah Flanagan said the Odeon was the closest cinema for many people. "There are loads of buses and taxis for people to use to get there, and it is much nearer than the cinema at Clifton Moor."

Another pupil, Jack Wheatley, said: "If you close the Odeon, you will be very foolish," while Ayse Boguc said: "If you close the cinema down, people will lose their jobs. I think this will make them feel sad."
