A WOMAN has been jailed for failing to pay her York council tax after investigators tracked her down to South Yorkshire.
City of York Council said Margaret Waddington left York in 1997 owing £1,426, with the arrears dating back as far as 1993.
She did not provide a forwarding address, but an investigation by the authority using tracing agents revealed she was living in Mexborough.
She was sentenced to 35 days in prison by York Magistrates yesterday.
Julie McMurray, the council's head of benefits and revenues services, said today: "If people don't pay, the shortfall has to be met by everyone else and the council will pursue non-payers and prosecute where necessary."
