A YORK school was in shock today after pupils learned that one of their schoolmates had died after a road accident.
Children and teachers at All Saints School, near Micklegate, were paying tribute to a 12-year-old girl who died last night after being hit by a pick-up truck on a North Yorkshire country road.
The schoolgirl lost her fight for life at Leeds General Infirmary last night. She had been transferred there from York Hospital following the accident, which happened at about 5.15pm on Monday.
Special assemblies were taking place at the school throughout the morning for teachers to break the tragic news of the girl's death to children at All Saints.
The 12-year-old was walking along a footpath by the side of the road towards Swinton, near Malton, when the accident happened on Broughton Road, at Flowery Bank, Broughton.
It is believed she had been crossing the B1257 Malton to Hovingham road to get a lift from friends who had parked by the side of the road in a red car when she was in collision with a black Mitsubishi Warrior pick-up truck towing a trailer.
The school was due to have been competing in a fun run today, but the event was cancelled.
