I AM not surprised that the likes of First and Arriva are worried about Grand Central's plans to run a low fare TransPennine Express (March 5).
If I had a choice between travelling on an overcrowded, stuffy, slow train for a high fare and travelling on an overcrowded, stuffy, slow train at a low fare I know which I would choose.
I commute to Manchester throughout the week and I now use First's service - but only because there is no choice.
If First can sort out their service and still charge £17.90 for a day return to Manchester and keep a straight face then I will gladly remain a customer of theirs.
Until then, all other things being equal, Grand Central would get my vote.
