A SCHOOLGIRL was fighting for her life today after she was struck by a pick-up truck on a North Yorkshire country road.

Police say the 14-year-old, believed to be local, was taken to York Hospital by paramedics following the accident on Broughton Road, at Flowery Bank, Broughton, near Malton, at about 5.15pm yesterday.

She was later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where her condition was today described as life-threatening.

Police said a local man in his thirties who had been driving the vehicle, a black Mitsubishi Warrior pick-up towing a trailer, was also injured.

He had been travelling along the B1257 Malton to Hovingham Road in the direction of Malton. The girl is said to have been crossing the road from north to south.

The girl was walking along a footpath by the side of the road towards Swinton when the accident happened.

PC Tim Alderson said it was believed she had been crossing the road to get a lift from friends who were parked by the side of the road in a red car.

The victim was thrown about ten metres towards a tree in the collision.

The road was closed until 9.30pm while officers cleared the area.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to phone PC Roger Walker on 01723 509555.
