I READ with interest David Jeffels article about the A64 (March 4).

I have worked for 12 years at Newitts. Along with 49 members of my staff, I have to join this road every working day.

Turning left to Malton is not too difficult as we join the flow of traffic; but turning right to York or going straight across the A64 to Claxton is very dangerous.

I have lost count of how many times I have joined the road and had horns sounded, lights flashed and unpleasant fingers pointed in my direction.

The most difficult problem is working out how fast vehicles are moving when you are lucky enough to find a gap in the traffic.

Motorbikes in the summer are the worst for speed and caravans create long lines of very slow moving traffic.

One quick and controversial solution would be to install speed cameras to slow the traffic down as the 60mph speed limit is ignored by a high percentage of people using this road.

...I WORK at Newitts opposite the Claxton turn off on the A64 and every day I have to run the gauntlet when leaving work, trying to get back across the road to come home to York.

It is terrifying. Hoping that someone will let you out or slow down sufficiently for you to make a quick getaway is often like waiting for tomorrow, as tomorrow never comes.

I have repeatedly had cars flashing their lights at me or hooting their horns and giving very rude gestures. I have witnessed a number of hairy moments when myself and colleagues have been leaving work, when a serious accident could have occurred between several cars all travelling at high speeds.

I appreciate everybody has to be somewhere and as a holiday route a major upgrade of the road would clearly be beneficial to workers, holiday makers and commerce.

Let's hope it's not so far down the line that major accidents occur.
