HAVING seen Jesus Christ Superstar many times before, and all by professional companies, I went to see the York Light Opera Company present this demanding rock musical at York Theatre Royal.
It was with some trepidation that we went. What sort of a production would I see and would it be up to the standards of past performances?
My doubts were cast aside from the first moment. An 11-piece band graced the orchestra pit, very few touring companies can boast as many as that, and their accompaniment was very good. Coupled with the simple staging of the play this all allowed a good pace to evolve.
Everything about this production was first class and it would be wrong of me to mention any of the leading singers, as all did the job admirably and convincingly, but Bev Jones must take the accolade in his capacity of director and musical director as a first-class leader of this talented company.
Well done to York Light for a most enjoyable musical evening.
