A YORK couple were set to make history today - by being the first to wed in a supermarket.
Asda at Monks Cross, York, became the first supermarket in England to be granted a wedding licence after cashier Jill Pigott, 42, asked to marry her fianc, Pete Freeman, 54, in store.
The New Earswick pair, who fell in love across an Asda check-out, were due to tie the knot on the store's mezzanine floor this afternoon.
Jill was to walk up the supermarket aisle in a white wedding dress, accompanied by 11 bridesmaids, before heading up the travelator to Asda's George department.
The store was due to stay open to shoppers throughout the ceremony, performed by City of York head registrar Robert Livsey.
The couple are so keen on Asda that their engagement and wedding rings have come from the store. The bridegroom's entire outfit, right down to his underpants, was from George.
