St Peter's School, in York, closed today for the funeral of a teacher who dedicated 25 years of his life to the school.
Peter Taylor, 53, who taught classics at the school in Clifton, lost his battle with cancer earlier this month.
Richard Drysdale, head of history at the school, said: "Peter was a sensitive and wise colleague who could always be relied on for support and advice.
"His sense of humour, accompanied by his deep laugh, was infectious.
"His unquenchable spirit was an inspiration to us all."
Mr Taylor joined the school in 1979 after graduating from the university at Liverpool where he had grown up, and teaching in Reading.
In 1981, he became housemaster of School House, a boys' boarding house, and in 1987 he became housemaster of Dronfield, the first girls' boarding house at St Peter's.
In 1988, he was made head of classics.
He also held the post of chairman of the Common Room and was the school's child protection officer.
Mr Taylor, who was married to Sue and had two children, Rachel and Ben, also coached tennis and rugby and was a referee at school rugby matches.
He was interested in classic cars and was a keen biker. He drove a Lancia around France with Sue to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
He enjoyed golf, was a keen Liverpool supporter and enjoyed travelling in France, Greece and Spain.
Peter died peacefully at York District Hospital, on February 18, with his wife and children at his bedside.
Mr Drysdale said: "He leaves behind many friends from all walks of life and all ages who will miss his company, good humour, wisdom and support. Our deepest sympathies go to Sue, Rachel and Ben."
The funeral was taking place at St Peter's School Chapel today.
