Alex Lloyd discovers a music night where York's best an be found.
TOMORROW (28th) sees the launch of a new night that has it all - great name, great venue and, most importantly, great music.
It's not often that a bunch of York's most talented musicians are squeezed into the same room doing what they do best, but that's essentially what The Little Num Num Club is.
The launch night at City Screen's Basement Bar will feature acoustic sets from Chris Helme, formerly of The Seahorses who these days fronts The Yards, along with singer-songwriter Hayley Hutchinson. Ex-Shed 7 singer Rick Witter will be guest DJ.
The club has been set up by Chris and Mike Harrison, manager of The Yards, and has a simple, laid-back formula - anything goes, as long as it's good.
Chris says: "We've told Rick, 'Play whatever you want'. It will be indie-ish and I'd imagine there will be lots of Stooges and the Stones."
Chris decided to set up this new forum for acoustic performers after realising he had neglected playing by himself for too long. The choice of venue came from providing support for Hayley at the Basement Bar in the past.
"There are not many nice venues for doing acoustic stuff but it really sounded really great," says Chris. "It should be quite interesting.
"The idea is just to have a laugh and be quite chilled out. I've not done any solo gigs for ages, but I just got back into playing on my own."
Chris is thinking about having different themes in the future, although you can rest assured you won't see the usual seventies night.
The club will take place bi-monthly and four more have already been booked for City Screen later in the year. More details can be found at www.theyards.org/thelittlenumnumclub.htm.
