IN response to Tony Taylor and WT Smith (Letters, February 6) and their inquiries about the proposed regions of the European Union, I ask them to consider keeping the local and parish councils and opting for an English Parliament where MPs would work for the nation.

No extra powers or money will be transferred from Westminster to the regions; this has already been made very clear in recent debates. Whereas a parliament for England would have powers.

Had we had the latter, only English politicians in an English Parliament would have been able to vote on foundation hospitals and top-up fees.

England needs, and must have, a voice, particularly in the EU. The UK Government speaks for England (though not separately) but Wales, Scotland and Ireland have their own representatives; England has none.

Not to have a Parliament for England is blatant discrimination, and although Mr Prescott would have you believe there is no such nationality as the English and therefore no country, I assure you there is indeed both and the English people are in fighting mode to prove this true fact.
